The fifth workshop entitled "Quality and Safety Issues Related to Botanicals" was held on August 21-24th, 2006. The conference was supported by a cooperative agreement between the NCNPR and the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) along with Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR, India) and took place at the NCNPR in University, MS.

The purpose of this conference was to review, discuss, and explore methods for determining the identity, purity, quality, and processing of plants, commonly known as botanicals. Topic areas included such issues as authentication, cultivation, collection, and post-harvest practices for producing quality plant material, and chemical, toxicological methods for quality/safety assessment. Contributed presentations, both oral and poster, are invited. Each session opened with a plenary speaker outlining the current approaches, limitations, and research needs of the topic area.
